Tannin/Yellow Water
Tannin water appears orange or tea like when
viewed in a white cup or toilet bowl. Many people make the mistake
of calling it iron. This is an easy mistake and even water treatment
sales people are fooled. Tannin is in the water stream as an
organic. This means it was alive at one time. It imparts the stain
because it is from rotting vegetation. It enters the water through
surface runoff and groundwater contact below the earths crust. It
does not affect the health of the water for drinking. It does
however give the water an earthy or musty taste. It also greatly
increases the amount of staining especially if iron is present. In
most all cases some iron is present with tannin. Because tannin is
an organic it must be treated differently than iron.
